Inspired by her younger sister who couldn’t have dairy, Kate began making dairy-free ice cream in 2014. She founded Kate’s with the mission to provide everyone the classic ice cream shop experience, regardless of dietary restriction. At Kate’s, we value making great ice cream by working with local makers and farmers.

Kate's Ice Cream has become a beloved part of the Portland food scene, quickly winning accolades such as 1st Place Best Vegan Ice Cream Shop in America by VegNews 2024 & 2025, Runner Up Best Ice Cream Shop by Portland Monthly in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and 2nd Place National Award Winner for Salted Peanut Butter Brittle ice cream. With scoop shops on Mississippi Avenue and NW 23rd, Kate’s has become a staple of Portland’s vegan dessert scene while attracting plenty of non-vegan fans along the way.
